Homework
All students are given homework and are expected to complete this by the date specified. In this respect we depend on full parental support. A College diary is supplied for this purpose.
Homework is important because it:
- encourages our students to develop the skills, confidence and motivation needed to study effectively on their own – this is essential given the importance of lifelong learning and adaptability in the modern world.
- consolidates and reinforces skills and understanding developed during the daily lessons.
- extends learning and sustains the involvement of parents and carers in the management of students’ learning and keeps them informed about the work students are doing in College.
- helps to manage particular demands, such as GCSE course work and preparation of SATs.
How much homework is set?
Each subject is allocated a number of weekly homework slots which students receive as a homework timetable at the beginning of the academic year. The time expectation is as follows:
- Years 7 & 8 students should spend up to 45 minutes a day.
- Year 9 students should spend between 1 & 2 hours a day.
- Years 10 & 11 students should spend up to 2 ½ hours a day.
It is worth bearing in mind that the precise amount of time spent on homework is much less important than the quality of the tasks set and the way tasks are planned to support learning.
