Physical Education

The school has been awarded the prestigious “Sportsmark Award” by Sport England and Ofsted inspectors noted a “wide range of extra curricular activities well supported by a large enthusiastic group of students”.

At Key Stage 3 all year 9 students participate in PE lessons (3 per cycle) and games lessons (2 per cycle) offering 5% curriculum contact allocation. Year 7 students are now blocked in the Physical Education lessons which allows for continuity. The department is looking to develop a new and innovative approach with such activities as pop lacrosse, uni hoc and golf being integrated into the curriculum.

At Key Stage 4 year 10 and 11 pupils experience option modules. Year 10 have now increased their allocation from 2 to 3 lessons per cycle with Year 11 retaining 2 per cycle. The department is again looking to extensively develop the programme at this level by introducing off site activities at local leisure centres and facilities like skiing, surfing and mountain biking. This will be supplemented by bringing in external coaches with expertise in such areas as martial arts, fitness, climbing and abseiling/rock climbing. Such innovations as the Junior Sports Leaders Award, National Governing Body Awards, First Aid and Sport Education are anticipated to be integrated within the next 12-18 months.

The department is committed to cross curricular and whole school activities through sports days, liaison with the pastoral team for tutor and year group activities, and a swimming gala. It is anticipated that year sports quizzes and a whole school fantasy football league will run. The team would like to see events extended to pupils, staff and parents attending local, national and international sporting events.

Extra curricular activities are open to the entire age and ability range of pupils however there are 5 football teams, a basketball team and 4 cricket teams. The team leader and department feel that this aspect needs to be developed extensively and cater for a wider variety of pupil.

Pupils, staff and parents are encouraged to suggest what activities they would like to see integrated into the school and the department would then look to ascertain its viability and logic to run if this cannot take place the team and team member will endeavour to direct that group of students to the appropriate club within the community. Links are developing extensively with Bournemouth Football Club, Oakmedians Rugby Club and Winton Cricket Club.

The teaching and coaching qualifications are diverse and varied however it is intended that this aspect of the team will be developed further as well as being supported by an expert team of coaches in a multiple of sports/activities.
