SEN Department
At Winton Arts and Media College we are committed to an inclusive approach where students are seen as unique individuals and supported to achieve their potential. This means that all students, regardless of disability are entitled to full access to curricula and extra-curricula activities. The school has wheelchair access to all major areas as well as a lift.
Each department is responsible for differentiating and adapting the curriculum and the SEN Department will advise, assist and monitor to make sure that students’ needs are being met. The majority of learning support is through Teaching Assistants (TAs) working with individuals or groups of pupils in the classroom.
The SEN Department also provides a range of intervention sessions and workshops designed to help pupils with specific difficulties or those whose literacy is weak. More specialist work is undertaken with pupils who have physical or sensory disabilities or have a Statement of Special Educational Needs. We have, for example, a dedicated physiotherapy room, as well as an ICT Technician who transcribes work for students with visual impairment. The Student Welfare Officer (SWO) and the school counsellor work closely with the Department.
We maintain close contact with a range of outside agencies and with feeder primary schools. The Educational Psychologist and the Learning Support service are regular visitors and undertake specialist assessments at our request. We work in partnership with parents wherever possible and are always happy to discuss concerns or problems. Day to day matters can usually be dealt with by the SEN office but appointments can also be made with the SENCO to discuss more serious issues.
We are proud of the recent Ofsted report which praised the level of care given to students with profound and complex difficulties and also applauded the progress made by all students identified as having special educational needs.
