Mufti for Umbillo

20/9/07

What a difference a mufti-day makes.

What change can you get out of £1…? That £1 can make a lasting change …more than you can imagine …

Thursday 20th September 2007 was Mufti – a day where we choose to make a difference in the lives of others. Umbilo School in Durban is our Link School in South Africa. The money we raised that day will be going to the students in Umbillo to furnish a classroom with desks and chairs that they desperately need. Class sizes in Umbillo can be as large as 40 students. The classrooms do not have enough chairs or desks for every student to sit during lessons so students take turns to use the desks and seating. Students do not complain – it is part of their everyday life.

During our recent visit we pledged to support Umbilo, in the first instance, by furnishing a classroom. The money raised will be used to buy for other students what we all take for granted.

Each student has to pay an annual fee of 1000 Rand to attend school. At an exchange rate of 14 Rand per £, this equates to £71 per year. Many children are unable to afford to go to school. We would like to sponsor children in the future by fundraising to meet some fees.
