Gifted and Talented Parents Evening

08/11/07

Year 7 Gifted and Talented Parents Evening

The evening focused on exploring the educational ideas behind generating a register of Gifted and Talented students from the perspective of the National Strategy for Education before moving on to consider the provision of learning opportunities for most able students at Winton Arts and Media College. In regard to the latter the College is committed to providing learning and teaching that engages and challenges all students as well as seeking to strengthen and develop extended learning opportunities through partnerships with the local community that bring benefits to all students including the gifted and talented.

I would like to thank the parents and boys who attended this evening for their generous contributions to the event. The ideas generated by the groups in regard to how different subjects may support the most able students will now be passed on to subject leaders and I eagerly await the ideas that individuals have for their Challenge Award projects.

Mufti for Umbillo

20/9/07

What a difference a mufti-day makes.

What change can you get out of ££1? That £1 can make a lasting change... more than you can imagine...

Thursday 20th September 2007 was Mufti – a day where we choose to make a difference in the lives of others. Umbilo School in Durban is our Link School in South Africa. The money we raised that day will be going to the students in Umbillo to furnish a classroom with desks and chairs that they desperately need. Class sizes in Umbillo can be as large as 40 students. The classrooms do not have enough chairs or desks for every student to sit during lessons so students take turns to use the desks and seating. Students do not complain – it is part of their everyday life.

During our recent visit we pledged to support Umbilo, in the first instance, by furnishing a classroom. The money raised will be used to buy for other students what we all take for granted.

Each student has to pay an annual fee of 1000 Rand to attend school. At an exchange rate of 14 Rand per £, this equates to £71 per year. Many children are unable to afford to go to school. We would like to sponsor children in the future by fundraising to meet some fees.
